About This Episode:
Ian Smith is the co-owner of Atilis Gym in Bellmawr, New Jersey. At the beginning of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Ian and his business partner Frank Trumbetti dutifully closed their gym for two weeks to help flatten the curve. Weeks passed and there was still no point in sight when he would be allowed to open his business again. With safety in mind, Ian and Frank developed at 15-point safety plan and very publicly opened their gym. Since that day, they have been embroiled in a court battle with New Jersey’s Governor, Phil Murphy, leading to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, the rescinding of their business license, threats of jail time and more recently the threat to size their property. This is not a political statement, but one for the right of business owners to safely run their business. This is their story.
